To continue on our theme of LA Cool that was started in the inspiring design store Twentieth, a short jump across town brings us to Maxfield.   A concept store, Maxfield is home to a fantastic selection of obscure avant-garde fashion designers as well as high fashion labels.  To house this collection of high fashion combined with Vintage and Gothic Rock jewelry, exquisite candles and a variety fashion and home accessories the LA Architecture firm Standard created an austere concrete block building that is a part of the full vision of the store  created by owner Tommy Perse.  Nearby is sister store “Maxfield Bleu” where the sale items are housed.

Amongst the brands represented are: Thomas Wylde, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Margiela, Rick Owens, selected Prada……..

Unfortunately we were not allowed to take interior photos, but there are many absolutely fabulous items to enjoy inside.

So in today’s age of ikea knock-offs and expensive DWR reproductions, where can you go to achieve true contemporary design?   The answer is the Twentieth Store / Gallery (founded by Stefan Lawrence in 1999.  Twentieth is on the forefront contemporary and innovation design working with many artists to bring anything you can dream of.   That is, If you dream of Sci-fi pod beds to horse hair covered bar stools, melted hand-blown functional amber glass, giant animal shaped lamps, unique porcelain accessories, stylish Credenzas, contrting Sofas, Sculpted Chairs…….

What made this a wonderful experience for us was the truly welcoming staff that just loves design and are happy to share their knowledge and chat design history with you.  It was inspiring to see so much creativity.  There are many design stores posing as galleries these days and Twentieth is the best mix of eclectic design, signature pieces and pure style!

Some of the designers represented from around the world include: Italy – Mattia Biagi (with his Tar  creations),  California- Ron Reihel, Marcel Wanders, Tom Dixon, Zaha Hadid, Mexico – Alberto Fria (the  creator of “transport” pod bed)  as well as Jasper Morrison, Ross Lovegrove, Amanda Levete, Maarten Baas, Piet Boon, Bertjan Pot, Jurgen Bey, Sergio Rodriguez ……

In this day and age where digital music is daily increasing its reign – there are still a few places where the music lover can go and enjoy the physicality of CDs & LPs. Rising above any music store I’ve ever been to is the Los Angelas Branch of Amoeba Music.  Since 2001 it has been a mecca to music lovers, a complete departure from today’s corporate chain stores and online retailers.  Here you can find any rhythm in any movement from all epochs and every corner of the world.   From obscure and underground beats to mainstream pop, tribal grooves, jazz, classics this is the place to discover your next favorite!

On top of all the wonderful new, used and vintage CDs, DVDs and Vinyls,  Amoeba Records is also a record label, a blog and hosts a series of in-store concerts.  An absolute must on any visit to Los Angeles.

There are three stores, the original in Berkeley (created in 1991 by Marc Weinstein) as well as the one shown here in Hollywood and another San Francisco branch.  Of the three, LA is definitely the best  – not only for their endless amount of content but also the atmosphere.  There you can browse for hours, go to the listening booth, browse some more or just allow your eyes to delight with the amazing collection of rock posters and t-shirts that cover every visible space.  The real beauty is that during all your glorious music perusing hours, no one will interfere with your selection rhythm.
