New York, NY 10013

10:30 am – 9:00pm  Daily

In the Heart of New York City’s China Town, one might not be surprised to find a Chopstick’s boutique. This is for good reason, as Yunhong Chopsticks is filled with over 200 different styles of the ancient utensil. Yunhong Chopsticks is a well known Chinese franchise, and this is the first outlet in the US.

The chopsticks are crafted from materials as wide spread as ebony, silver, bamboo, ox horn,  Stainless steel, bone, mahogany, mother of pearl, and even plastic! The very special chopsticks can be purchase as single pairs, while others come in special gift boxes.  There are many lines that include special editions such as hand-painted representations of the Chinese calendar or inscribed with Chinese poetry.  Of course the boutique also carries small bowls and chopsticks stands.

If you are in the neighborhood, Yunhong makes a great quick stop to marvel at the myriad of colors, styles and designs available.

Arasta Bazaar – Istanbul, Turkey

Arasta Bazaar

Arasta Çarşısı No:143,
Sultanahmet, Istanbul, Turkey

9:00  –  19:00  Daily

This is bazaar is located behind the Sultan Ahmed Mosque mosque. Situated on the site of 17th century stables; the Arasta bazaar is small and extremely touristic – full of neatly arranged gift shops . It’s not a place to go on a dedicated trip; it is a good resting stop between Sultan Ahmed Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Mosaic Museum – or a place to burn time or grab a bite in case the above are not open yet.

Though like any of Istanbul’s many Bazaars, the Arasta is good place to look at the different Turkish handcrafts.

We did find one excellent non-tchotchke spot that stood out selling lamps.

Take all the cool that Italian design that drips into the Diesel brand and then distill it into a single location.  The result is more then a super hip  jeans store, it is the Diesel Denim Gallery.  While you can also shop for the best in Diesel-ware, the canvas for art installations is reason enough to visit.  Artists like Korban FlaubertClemens Kogler, Paul Clay, Jason Hackenwerth and his balloon art, Christian Nguyen, and Jaime Hayon Arrojadoa with Elements designed for Moooi.  Sebastien Agneesens, the founder of Formavision, has orchestrated the majority of the exhibitions.

Shop for accessories, a few lines designed especially for the store, and ‘limited edition’ hand made denim jeans.  If you are curious about the jeans phenomenon, a new documentary Blue Gold can shed some light.

The Diesel Denim Gallery itself is warm and open.   The furniture and displays are hand crafted and unique,  while the space swims with the natural light.  The staff is friendly and obviously happy being there.
