Tube:  Kentish Town,  Hampstead, Golders Green

“The Heath” sprawls across 320 hectares (791 acres) of Camden and Barnet.  Encompassing ancient woodlands, wildflower meadows, towering trees, running streams and over 30 lakes and ponds.  Full of over 300 species of fungi, the best place in London to see various species of kingfishers, red warblers, British woodpeckers, dragonflies and bats!  There are at  least 55  artifacts, monuments and archaeological sites including The Saxon ditch (AD986),

Hampstead Heath is also a consistent winner of  a Green Flag Award which sets the “the national standard for parks and green spaces in the United Kingdom.”  Its miles of walking paths, cycling lanes, forest tracks and rambling meadows Hampstead Heath exudes pastoral bliss. An inspiration to many a great artist: John Constable (romantic painter),  John Keats (poet), CS Lewis (novelist, academic, theologian…), John Atkinson Grimshaw (painter), Percy Bysshe Shelley (romantic poet), Lord Byron (poet), Leigh Hunt (writer),

On the personal side, we spent one stunning spring Sunday lost in the Heath. In a city park experience like no other I’ve ever had.   We picked up a picnic lunch in Highgate and wandered into the green.  We soon lost ourselves among the trees around t 1pm on a warm may Sunday – a time when any park in our hometown of New York City is packed to the hilt with people.  We soon found a secluded spot in a forested glen and we lunched.  We DID NOT SEE ANOTHER PERSON for over 30 minutes!!! Our solitude was gently eased when a lovely woman wandered through- searching for elderflower, for her elderflower wine …

Hampstead heath is a piece of the old world left untouched, where fairies play and people can once again be a part of nature.  So swim in its ponds and walk in every direction to find beauty in its overabundant flora and flora; delight in its wonder and realize what a park can truly be.

The Hungarian State Opera House first opened its doors in 1884.  Designed by Miklós Ybl, one of the most renowned Hungarian architects of the 19th century, the construction was created in an eclectic, neo-Renaissance style.  There are many baroque details and frescoes by the top Hungarian artists of the time, including Bertalan Székely, Árpád FesztyMór Than and Károly Lotz.  On either side of the risalit are statues of Ferenc Liszt and Ferenc Erkel, two of the outstanding artists of Hungarian music.  Both being the work of Alajos Stróbl.

A wonderful place for listening as well as viewing, the Hungarian State Opera House is home to the third best acoustics in al of Europe! With only the Scala in Milan and the Paris Opera House creating a more detailed sound environment.

If you are not able to attend a performance, then try to  take the guided tour.  The tours are given twice daily in many different languages. Although they are bit formulaic and the guide may be on the weak side- they are definitely worth it just to have the chance to explore the interior of this magnificent concert hall.

The New Theater – Új Színház – is located across the street from the opera house.  Walk to the end of the narrow Dalszinhaz Utca and you will see this very striking Art Deco edifiace.

Designed in 1909 bu Hungarian architect Béla Lajta the Új Színház was originally the night club Parisiana.  In 1910 the name was changed to the Crystal Pallace and in 1912 it was changed again to the simpler Dance Pallace. The name game continued in 1919 when  the moniker became the Variety Theatre and then quickly afterwards in 1925 The National Theatre and later both the Studio Theatre and Andrássy Theatre.

In the 1950’s the façade was restored and it was once again renamend to the Jókai Theatre. In the 60’s the facade frieze was demolished and the buidling become the Thalia.  Finally to be restored and resurrected in the 80’s as the Új Színház.

Currently the building is still quite striking and worth a look when you are in the neighborhood.

Completed in 1905 after 54 years of construction, St. Stephen’s Basilica was named after the first King of Hungary (975–1038); whose mummified right hand is kept in the reliquary.  The building is an absolutely magnificent carved work of art.  The dome is 96m high and  filters daylight in a magical way, reflecting in guilded textures the detail of the mosaics. Absolutely breath taking.

A good tip is to bring binoculars so you can see the details of the mosaics (they are so intricate they can easily be mistaken for frescos!!).  Make sure you walk all around the building; and know you can walk up to the cupola for some great views of the city

Attending mass outside of visiting hours gives a different perspective on this lovely cathedral.  Be sure to also find out  about any of the organ concerts often happening- they are sonically stunning!

In 2003, under the direction of André Heller, Swarovski brought together innovative interpretations of renowned international artists through the medium of  multi-faceted crystalline colours.  Creative forms merge with the world of scent and sound into a kaleidoscope for all the senses.

The mind-blowing installations include works by Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, Chagall, Miro, Keith Haring and Niki de Saint Phalle, Susanne Schmogner,Thomas Feuerstein, Fabrizio Plessi, Brian Eno, Alexander McQueen, Toord Bontje, Hans-Magnus Enzensberger, André Heller.

“Just as the crystal stands as an age-old symbol for change and transformation, the Crystal Worlds are continually extended, redesigned and transformed, in order to create new space for dreaming. They invite, far from everyday life, to a magical experience.
